Herbert and Mertie - 1942

Herbert Adolph Merlau was born on November 1, 18851, in Wales, New York, the fourth child of Charles Merlau and Elizabeth Kopp. Shortly after his birth, Herbert's family moved to Strykersville, New York on a farm purchased by his father16,28. Growing up on the farm, Herbert gained experience in farming, as well as attending school. In 1900 Herbert, age 14, was living with his parents and sister, Nettie, but in the 1910 Census, he is listed as Head of the household29, with his mother and sister, his father having died in 1908. Herbert was now a full-time farmer.
On April 9, 1919, Herbert married Mertie V. Nichols30. Mertie was born on December 19, 189318, the daughter of Dallas H. Nichols and Clara Mary Parker. Herbert and Mertie settled in strykersville, and he continued to work the family farm. During this time, Herbert helped establish the Strykersville Volunteer Fire Company as a charter member. About 1922, Herbert and Mertie moved to a farm in the Town of Java, just south of Java Village, where they lived the remainder of their lives, and where their children were born. Herbert died on August 23, 196318, and Mertie died on October 8, 198218.
