Inset from Map of Bennington

The location of the Zehler homestead can be seen on this inset from the Map of Bennington.  The homes of "Peter Zholar", "Peter Zholar, Jr.", "C. Zholar" are shown in the lower center portion of the inset, marked with a "red asterisk".  They all lie on a short stretch on the Allegany Road (present day Route 77).  Near Peter, Jr's home is the saw mill, "S. Mill", located on the Mill Lot and lying on the south bank of Cayuga Creek, which ran through the Zehler farm.  An old farm road ran along the creek, which eventually became the route of Manning Road.  In 1860, Peter Zehler, Jr. purchased the Mill lot and took up the occupation of sawyer.
