George and Helen Whitlock



Helen C. Zehler was born in July 1869143, in Sheldon, New York, the second child of Charles Zehler and Mary Backe.  She grew up on the family farms in Bennington and Sheldon.  Helen married George Norris Whitlock on January 6, 1887155, probably in Warsaw.  George was born April 6, 1867, the son of Samuel Norris Whitlock and Emily Benedict155.  The 1900 U.S. Census143 lists George and Helen, living with his widowed mother on Brooklyn Street in Warsaw.  George was working as a button maker in a button factory.  Then, after a short marriage of 15 years, Helen died on March 1, 1902155.

i. Walter N. Whitlock Walter was born on May 23, 1893155, and died on April 30, 1894155.
ii. Norris C. Whitlock Norris was born March 20, 1897155, and he died December 31, 1977 155.  Norris married Muriel Charlotte Donnelly.

On November 14, 1904, George married Bertha C. Pfaff155.  Prior to 1910144, they moved to Batavia, New York, where George worked as an insurance agent.  George continued to live in Batavia, where he operated a grocery store153 and later became manager of the A&P Store there154.  George died on August 20, 1920155.



Norris Whitlock:

Norris C. Whitlock was born in March 20, 1897155, the second child of George Whitlock and Helen Zehler.  He grew up with his family in Warsaw, New York.  In 1910, at the age of 13, he was a newsboy for the local paper144, the beginning of his lifelong interest in the newspaper business.  Norris' career began in 1916 at the Daily News in Batavia156.  In 1917, the Daily News reported that Norris had accepted a job in Meadville, Pennsylvania157, where he was a general reporter158.

On April 11, 1917, Norris married Muriel Charlotte Donnelly155.  Muriel was born October 13, 1898, the daughter of Charles Allen Clark Donnelly and Phoebe Matilda Wilson155.  The wedding likely took place in Batavia, prior to Norris assuming a position with the Meadville newspaper.  Norris and Muriel only lived in Meadville a short time, as their first child was born in Buffalo, New York in November 1918155.  In Buffalo, Norris worked for the Buffalo Times and the Buffalo Evening News, before he joined the Buffalo Courier-Express158.  He had a 25 year career with the Courier-Express as a member of the advertizing staff158.  During this period, he also served as Secretary of the Food Industry Sales Executives158.

Norris died there on December 31, 1977158.  After Norris' death, Muriel relocated to Charleston, South Carolina.  She died there on February 28, 1983155.

i. Norris Harold Whitlock Norris was born November 9, 191818, and he died February 16, 200718.  Norris married Helen G. Arensberg.
ii. Helen Louise Whitlock Helen was born December 10, 192218 and she died March 1, 200518.  On May 14, 1944, she married Jack A. Merlino.  Jack was born July 24, 191918, and died November 29, 199418.
