The enlarged map above shows the German States approximately as they existed in the 1850's when the Zehler family left for the United States. Our family came from the area indicated by the green asterisk. Note that immediately to the east lies the Principality of Birkenfeld. This small sliver of land was granted to the Duchy of Oldenberg by the Treaty of Vienna. The main portion of Oldenberg, (number 1 on the map) lies in the northwest section of the German States.
