John Graves

John Graves was born on July 28, 18771, in Bennington, New York, son of Jacob Greff and Maria Zehler.  He grew up on the family farms in Bennington and Sheldon, with a brief interlude when the family moved to Iowa.  In the late 1800's, John lived with his aging mother and father and continued to operate the family farm.  The 1900 Census, shows John living with his mother, his father having died than two months earlier113.  Later that same year, John, along with his mother, moved to Lancaster, New York, where he began work as a blacksmith for the New York Central Railroad, in the company shop in Depew, New York40.

On September 13, 1904, John married Clara Amelia Schwartz at St. Mary's of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Lancaster40.  Clara was born on April 29, 1879, the daughter of Joseph Schwartz and Gertrude Link.  Clara grew up on her family's farm in Lancaster, one of eight children.  In 1900, Clara was living with her mother and working as a seamstress120.  Following their marriage, John and Clara settled in the village of Lancaster.  John continued to work as a blacksmith for the railroad and Clara continued as a dress maker.  In 1910, they were living at 22 Albany Street, Lancaster121, and by 1920 they had moved to 10 Brady Street122.  In both cases they owned their home free of mortgage.  Around 192040, John began building a new home for his family and, in 1930, they were living at 49 Park Boulevard123.

In 1930, when the railroad shop in Depew was closed, John transferred to Albany, New York and continued to work for the railroad in their Albany shop.  During the week, John stayed with his nephew, Raymond Martin, and his family.  On weekends, John traveled home to be with his family, who remained in Lancaster.  He retired in 1943 and returned to Lancaster.  John and Clara's daughter Hilda, who remained single, helped care for them as they aged.  Clara died on August 13, 1945, and John died on September 8, 1965.
