John and Mary Zehler



John Zehler was born in Bennington, Wyoming County, New York in 18631.  In 189658, he married Mary Riedl in Sheldon, New York.  They lived in Bennington, where they raised a family of four children.

The children of John and Mary are:

i. Otto P. Zehler Otto was in January of 189733, and he died in 195562.  Otto remained single.
ii. Leonora M. Zehler Leonora was born September 27, 189832, and she died October 22, 196932.  Leonora remained single.
iii. Herman Michael Zehler Herman was born October 2, 189918, and he died in June 1972 18.  Herman married Eleanor Mary Bartz.
iv. Ruth E. Zehler Ruth was born September 5, 190118, and she died April 20, 199418.  Ruth remained single.


John Zehler was born July 5,18631, the third child of Peter Zehler and Mary Differt.  He grew up on the family farm in Bennington where he was exposed to the life of farming and operating the family sawmill.  Then in January 1889, John joined his brother Michael in purchasing the Mill Lot from their father.  John apparently participated in the operation of the sawmill until after his marriage.  In 1902, John sold his share of the Mill Lot to Michael for $1,200.

On February 4, 189658, John married Mary Riedl, the daughter of Paul Riedl and Elizabeth Ruprecht.  The Riedl family belonged to the local German American community which attended St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church in Sheldon.  After their marriage, John and Mary lived on the Riedl farm, located on Burroughs Road, in Bennington, adjacent to the boundary with the Town of Sheldon.  John initially rented use of the farm33, then in 1902, after selling his share of the Mill Lot, he purchased the farm23.  John continued to work the dairy farm for the remainder of his life.

Mary died on August 20, 1941 and John died on August 4, 1946.  They are buried in St. Cecilia's cemetery in Sheldon.



Otto Zehler:

Otto P. Zehler was born in January 189733.  He grew up on the family farm in Bennington.  In 1920, while still living at home, he was working out as a farm laborer49.  Then in 1930 Otto owned his own farm on the Allegany Road (Rte 77) 57.  His sister, Ruth, was living him at the time, presumably helping keep house.

Otto remained single throughout his life and died in 1955.  He is buried with his family in the cemetery at St. Cecilia's.



Lenora Zehler:

Lenora Zehler was born in September 27, 189832.  Lenora grew up in the family farm on Burroughs Road in Bennington.  She was still living with her parents in 193057, and was still living on Burroughs Road at the time of her death on October 22, 196932.  Leonora remained single throughout her life.



Herman Zehler:

Herman Michael Zehler was born in October 2, 189918.  He grew up on the family farm in Bennington.  In 1920, while still living at home, he was working out as a farm laborer49

On April 18, 1928, Herman married Eleanor Mary Bartz at St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church in Sheldon.  Eleanor was born January 4, 190618, the daughter of Nicholas W. Bartz and Ella Oberteen.  Herman and Eleanor settled into a life of farming and in 1930 lived on a rented farm on the Wales-Strykersville Road in Sheldon57.  They latter purchased a farm on Humphrey Road in Sheldon.

Herman and Mary raised a family of four boys and six girls.  Herman died in June of 197218, and Eleanor died on May 24, 199618.



Ruth Zehler:

Ruth E. Zehler was born in September 5, 190118.  She grew up on the family farm in Bennington, New York.  In 1930, Ruth was living with her brother57, Otto, probably helping keep house  Ruth died on April 20, 199418.  She remained single throughout her life.
