The Ancestors of Neuel Kimball

The starting point for our Kimball ancestors is the "History of the Kimball Family in America⁹¹", which gives the early history of the Kimball family.  This source lists the descendants of Richard Kimball, whose story is described below.

Our Immigrant Ancestors

Richard Kimball was born in England in the late 1700s.  He is first noted in the Parish of Rattlesden, county of Suffolk, where the parish register records "Henry Kemball ye sonne of Richard and Vrsula his wife baptized 1615 12 of August"⁹¹.  Henry was the second child of Richard and Ursula Scott, indicating they were married some years before his birth.

Richard and Ursula continued to live at Rattleden, where their first eight children were born⁹¹.  The family sailed on April 10, 1634 aboard the ship Elizabeth, out of Ipswich, England⁹¹.  They landed in Massachusets and soon settled in Watertown, where their ninth child was born.  Richard was proclaimed a freeman in 1635 and a Propritor in 1636/37⁹¹.

In 1637, Richard was invited to move to Ipswich, Massachusets, because that town was in need of a wheelwright⁹¹.  He accepted and the family resettled in Ipswich, were there last two children were born⁹¹.  This move may have been influenced by his brother-in-law, Thomas Scott, who already lived in Ipswich.  Richard was well respected as a wheelwright and served in several Town offices⁹¹.

On October 23, 1661, Richard married Margaret Dow, the widow of Henry Dow of Hampton, New Hampshire, Ursula having previously died⁹¹.  Richard signed his will on March 5, 1674/75, and died later that year⁹¹.  Margaret died the following spring on March 1, 1676⁹¹.

The Family of John Kimball and Mary Bradstreet

John Kimball was born in 1631 at Rattleden, county of Suffolk, England, the son of Richard Kimball and Ursula Scott. He came to America with his family⁹¹.  About 1655, John married Mary Bradstreet and they settled in Ipswich, Massachusets.  By trade, John was a wheelwright, as was his father, but he was also a farmer and frequesntly bought and sold land⁹¹.  John died on May 6, 1698.

The Family of John Kimball, Jr. and Sarah Goodhue

John Kimball was born on March 16, 1668/69, the son of John Kimball and Mary Bradstreet.  On December 2, 1692, he married Sarah Goodhue at Watertown, the daughter of Joseph Goodhue and Sarah Whipple.  John and Sarah initially settled in Ispswich, where their children were born.  Like his father, John was a farmer and a wheelwright⁹¹.  In 1696, his father deeded him the homestead and lands at Kimball's Point.

On August 4, 1726, John and Sarah sold their home in Ipswich and moved to Stonington, Connecticut.  Finally, he purchased 200 acres of land in Preston, Connecticut and moved there in the spring of 1727.  John died at Preston on May 4, 1761.

The Family of David Kimball and Sarah Pride

David Kimball was born on May 8, 1700, the son of John Kimball and Sarah Goodhue⁹¹.  In 1723, David bought 100 acres of land in Preston, Connecticut, and moved there from Ipswich⁹¹.  This purchase established the Kimball Homestead in Preston, which remained in the family for 220 years, being sold in 1945⁹².

On October 20, 1826, David married Sarah Pride and they settled on his newly purchased land in Preston, where they raised their family⁹¹.  Sarah died on February 10, 1769⁹¹.

The children of David and Sarah are:

Following the death of Sarah, David married Mary Culver on March 24, 1774⁹¹.  David died in 1776 in Peston⁹¹.

The Family of Nathan Kimball and Margaret Rix

Nathan Kimball was born on March 6, 1732⁹¹, at Preston, Connecticut, the son of David Kimball and Sarah Pride⁹¹.  On February 13, 1754, he married Margaret Rix, the daughter of a neighbor⁹¹.  They continued to live in Preston, where their children were born.  Nathan took over managment of the family estate from his father and passed it on to his son Prosper^91,92.  Nathan died June 4, 1811⁹¹.

The Family of David Kimball and Eunice Brown

David Kimball was born on May 20, 1763, at Preston, Connecticut, the son of Nathan Kimball and Margaret Rix.  On December 28, 1785, David married Eunice Brown⁹¹.  Eunice was born in 1767⁹¹.  David and Eunice intially settled in Preston, where their first child was born.  By 1790, Elijah and Eunice had removed to Charleston Four Corners, in Montgomery County, New York⁹¹, where their remaining children were born.

David died at Charleston Four Corners on December 22, 1811⁹¹, and Eunice died there on March 11, 1813⁹¹.

The Family of Elijah Kimball

Elijah Kimball was born on February 19, 1802, at Charleston Four Corners, Montgomery County, New York, the son of David Kimball and Eunice Brown⁹¹.  On June 19, 1825, Elijah married Margaret Knox,⁹³.  Margaret was born on March 12, 1802, the daughter of George Knox and Lilly McEntyer²⁶.

Elijah and Margaret settled at Sloanesville, in neighboring Schoharie County, where Margaret's parents lived.  Margaret died there on June 19, 1825²⁶,

The children of Elijah and Margaret are:

Following the death of his first wife, Elijah married Nancy Knox⁹¹.  Nancy was born on March 11, 1800, also the daughter of George Knox and Lilly McEntyer²⁶.  They continued to live in Sloansville where their children were born.  Elijah died on June 5, 1877²⁶.  and Nancy died on May 22, 1884²⁶.
