Our immigrant ancestor in the Perry family was Ezra Perry who lived in the town of Sandwich, Plymouth Colony. Apparently, he came to New England at an early age along with other family members, and is first recorded in Sandwich in 1644. His brother Edward Perry was the great grandfather of Oliver Hazard Perry the "Hero of Lake Erie" in the War of 1812.
Initial information on the Perry family came from Uncle Leigh Zahler, who recalled Perry family members going back to Williams Perry, father of Joseph N. Perry. The connection between Williams Perry and Ezra Perry comes from a series of articles in the New England Historical and Genealogical Record300, and the research of Owen Adelbert Perkins274.
Ezra Perry was born in Devonshire, England about 1625300. He lived in Sandwich, Massachusetts as early as 1644, when his name first appears in the town records and where he married Elizabeth Burgess on February 12, 1651300. Ezra was apparently well placed in the community and counts among his descendants Benjamin Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt and General Douglas MacArthur. He is thought to have been the brother of Edward Perry, another prominent resident of Sandwich and the ancestor of Oliver Hazard Perry, the "Hero of Lake Erie" in the War of 1812. Ezra Perry died at Sandwich on October 16, 1689300, and his wife died on September 26, 1717300.
