Emilia Zehler

Emilia Zehler

Emilia Sophia Zehler was born on March 26, 18842, in Bennington, New York, the sixth child of Nicholas Zehler and Matilda DeTemple.  Emma grew up in Bennington and was living there with her father and brother, William, in 190033.  By 1902, however, she had moved to Buffalo and was working as a dress maker184.  Like several other members of the Zehler family, she moved to the city where work was more plentiful.

On March 31, 1907, Emma married Edwin Roy Mugridge at St Mark's Episcopal Church in Buffalo.  Ed was born on July 11, 188140, in Buffalo, the son of George Warren Mugridge and Emeline Groger.  At the time of their marriage, Ed was employed as an engineer for the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co., working on maintenance and improvement of the Erie Canal and Lake Erie ports.  This work necessitated frequent moves to new job sites.

After their marriage, Ed and Emma initially lived in Buffalo, however, they soon moved to Toledo, Ohio185, where their first child was born.  By 1914, Ed and Emma had returned to Buffalo, where their other two children were born40, and in 1920, Ed was working as an auto mechanic in Buffalo176.  By 1921, however, the family had moved to Cleveland, where Ed opened an auto repair business40.  He was still working as an auto mechanic in 1930186.  However, Ed lost his business during the Depression, and returned to work with the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co40.  His son would later join him.

Ed retired in 1949, and he and Emma moved to Dunedin, Florida.  Ed died there on July 10, 195140, and Emma died in Clearwater, Florida on June 1, 195440.  They are buried at Sylvan Abbey in Clearwater.

The children of Ed and Emma are:

Edwin Roy Mugridge, Jr. was born in March 21, 191618, in Cleveland, Ohio, the third child of Edwin Mugridge and Emma Zehler.  Most of Eddie's early years were spent in Cleveland, except for a short interlude in Buffalo, New York.  During this period, Eddie gained experience as an auto mechanic working with his father40.  After graduating high school, he joined the merchant marine, which took him to many world ports40.  Later during the Depression, Eddie worked along with his father for the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co.40.

On June 16, 1938, Eddie married Helen Catherine Dettmer in Cleveland, Ohio40.  Helen was born on August 26, 191718, the daughter of Adolph G. Dettmer and Helen J. Robison.  Eddie and Helen settled in Cleveland, where they raised a family of three boys and three girls.  After serving in the Navy during World War II, Eddie worked as a mechanic/engineer for a variety of companies and organizations40.  Then, in 1951, he joined Lincoln Electric, beginning a 27 year career as mechanic in their maintenance department40.  Eddie retired in 1978, and he and Helen traveled extensively.

Helen died on June 16, 200718, nearly 90 years old, and Eddie died on December 21, 200818, at the age of 92.  Their children have written a more expansive story of the lives of their Father and Mother, which they kindly allowed us to use.
