Margaret Sailer was born in September, 18761, the second child of Jacob Zehler and Magdalena Kreib. Her early years were likely spent in Attica, New York, where the family lived in 1880202. However, by 1891, Jacob and family had moved to Buffalo, where he opened a saloon203,204. On July 13, 1893, at the age of seventeen, Margaret married Hugh Buggy in Buffalo12. Hugh was born in April 1873, in Canada and immigrated to America in 1886218. In 1900, Hugh and Margaret were living in Buffalo with their daughter and Hugh was working as a railroad laborer218. However, the marriage of Hugh and Margaret soon ended in divorce. By 1905, Hugh was living alone and working as a day laborer219. Their daughter was living with her maternal grandparents219.
The child of Hugh and Ida is:
Fourth Generation
i. | Ida Bertha Buggy | Ida was born on May 17, 189518, and she died in November 197218. Ida married (1) ______ Jackson and (2) Gordon J. Fraser. |
After 1905, Margaret's story is less certain. Family members report that Margaret remarried to Peter Hoffman, and that she continued to live in Buffalo, near other members of the Sailer family40. The 1920 U.S. Census, lists Margaret, living on East Genesee St, in Buffalo, under the surname Hoffman228. Also listed in her household is Peter Hoffman. Their relationship, however, is called into question by other information in the Census. First, Margaret is designated as divorced and second, the word "husband" describing Peter is crossed out and he is designated as single228. Further, in the 1930 Census, Margaret is listed under the surname Buggy, living with Peter Hoffman and her daughter. She is still listed as divorced and Peter as single229. Clearly, Margaret had lived with Peter Hoffman for some time. Margaret died in 1944, and is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo270. Her grave stone indicates she was the wife of Peter L. Hoffman.
Ida Buggy:
Ida Bertha Buggy was born on May 17, 189518, the only child of Hugh Buggy and Margaret Sailer. Ida lived with her parents in Buffalo, until their divorce. In 1905, Ida is living with her grandparents, Jacob and Lena Sailer and attending school219. She was still living with her grandparents in 1910, this time working as a Clerk in a department store, at the age of fourteen206. Ida's whereabouts in 1920 is unknown, however, in 1930, she appears to be living with her mother. This Census lists "Ina Jackson", a widow, living with Margaret Buggy and described as "daughter"229. Her age and the other information listed indicate that this is Ida Buggy. If so, the Census indicates that Ida was married in about 1921 to a man named Jackson, who died prior to 1930. Ida was working as a ticket agent for a theater229.
Ida subsequently married Gordon J. Fraser40. Gordon was born September 22, 1898, in Dundas, Ontario, Canada, the son of Duncan Fraser and Margaret Bresnahan18,220. Gordon and Ida lived in the Buffalo area for many years. For example, Gordon's Social Security Application, filed in 1945, lists an address on University Ave., in Buffalo220. He was working at a wardrobe dry cleaners. In addition, probate proceedings filed in 1951 for the estate of Ida's father, Hugh Buggy, lists her address in Tonawanda, New York34, a suburb of Buffalo.
After retirement, Gordon and Ida moved to Fort Lauderdale Florida. Ida died there in November 197218, and Gordon died on September 6, 198118. They had no children.
