Florence Anna Zehler was born on February 13, 18732, in Bennington, New York, the first child of Nicholas Zehler and Matilda DeTemple. She grew up on the family farm in Bennington. However, by the time of her marriage Florence was living in Buffalo172, where jobs were likely more available. It is not known where she was employed.

On June 18, 1896172, Florence married Frank Henry Mayne, before a Justice of the Peace in Cheektowaga, New York. Frank was born October 3, 187540, the son of John Mayne and Phoebe Hall. Interestingly, the DeTemple family bible states Frank and Florence were married on April 8, 189639. The reason for this difference can be inferred from the birth date of their first child in January of 1897.
Frank and Florence Mayne settled in Buffalo, where Frank founded Mayne Meats, a meat market located at 2608½ Main Street40. Frank continued to work as a butcher until his untimely death on December 18, 191434, caused by a burst appendix40. Shortly before his death, Frank's older sons began working at Mayne Meats.
Following Frank's death Florence continued to live in Buffalo and raise her nine children; support for the family was provided by her children. Thus in 1920173, Glen, Herbert, and LeRoy worked as butchers at Mayne Meats, which was operated by Glen and Herbert; Grace was a clerk in a printing shop and Walter worked as delivery boy for a dry goods store. This pattern continued in 1930174, when Florence was living with eight of her children, all of whom were working. Only Grace had married and she lived in the second house down the street. Florence died on November 12, 193534.
